Swastika, Ontario
The town of Swastika is a small community located within the municipal boundaries of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Historically being known as a thriving mining community and railroad junction, the town has since become a quiet roadside community with a small poulation of around 500 people. Nowadays the town is mostly known for its many historical sites and buildings, attracting a small amount of tourists with it's multiple motel and cafe businesses. The town is noted to have few stores, churches, and schoolhouses with enough to simply fit the needs of its residents.
Recently Swastika has made its first new news headlines in years, none of which about any change or growth in the community, but rather an issue that many of it's residents have been at peace with for years. In light of the recent movements to rename towns and tear down statues of rascist or controversial figures in history, the town's namesake being a worthy inclusion. Though the town was founded and named after it's good fortune over a hundred years ago, Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany's use of the Swastika during the Second World War had "cast a shadow" had completely changed the symbol's meaning in the cultural zeitgeist into a symbol of hate. Though there are no clear signs that the town will be changing it's name anytime soon, the Swastika mine that gave the. town it's name has since. been renamed to the. "Crescent Mine".
